Sober Living Homes, sometimes known as sober living residences and sober living facilities, are facilities which offer structured, safe housing and supportive, residential living conditions to those leaving drug rehab programs. Often, they are designed for people who have successfully completed detox and have overcome the most difficult stages of the program. The purpose of these homes is to provide a haven from addiction and stress. Many of them are privately owned homes and are fully furnished. They can be used as an inpatient or outpatient treatment facility, but they are also open for guests. Some are staffed by professionals such as physicians and psychologists.

Sober living homes, as their name implies, are designed for and provide residential living conditions to those who have been through treatment programs. Such homes are usually set up to have specific features and functionalities, such as individual sleeping quarters, common areas, laundry facilities and cooking facilities. These homes generally offer some type of support services such as meals on a certain schedule, group counseling sessions, job assistance, and recreational activities such as pools, spas, and Jacuzzi. They may also have a health club or other activities which are designed to give residents the opportunity to socialize and relax. Most of these residences offer amenities such as laundry rooms, kitchens, and laundry facilities which can be used for the purpose of maintaining cleanliness and sanitary conditions. Many of the residences also have exercise or recreation areas, and some of them offer other types of special services such as one-on-one counselling.

The purpose of residential drug rehab programs is to get addicts off of drugs and alcohol and into a safe, controlled environment which will allow them to regain control of their lives. These residential centers have several advantages over detoxification programs, including having longer periods of rehabilitation than a detox program, being less expensive than detoxification programs, and providing patients with better access to social services, employment and educational opportunities. People who enter these programs are often referred to the National Home Study Program (NHSP) and the NAHB (National Association of Drug Addiction and Alcoholism) as soon as possible. This allows them to continue their recovery and treatment without having to worry about how they will be financially supported after they complete the program. In many cases, people who enter these residential programs stay in a residential rehab program until they become independent.
