Sober Living Homes, also known as sober living apartments and sober living homes, are residential facilities that offer supportive, organized living arrangements and safe housing for those exiting drug rehab programs. SLHs usually serve as a transition between these programs and traditional society. SLHs are often found in assisted living communities, but they can also be found in individual housing units, condos or mobile homes. The facilities also cater to the needs of the residents with services that include grocery stores, laundry rooms, fitness centers and onsite medical care.

Residential drug rehab homes vary in size. The average size of a residential rehab home is around fifty-five thousand square feet with twenty-four beds. Some facilities require that individuals come into the facility for a detoxification process, while other residential rehabs do not. If an individual is sent straight to a detoxification center, they will have access to facilities such as showers and bathrooms but will not have the freedom to take part in activities like cooking or visiting with family and friends. Most detoxification centers have onsite medical care that will provide detoxification and other treatment services, but a detoxification center cannot house the entire staff of an individual recovery program. Individualized, onsite support from residential rehab staff members and other members of the community is usually available to the client.

Residential facilities for people exiting drug rehab usually have at least one onsite recreational facility that is designed for guests. These facilities typically include pools, saunas and exercise areas. A swimming pool is also common in SLHs, which allows patients to stay in shape while taking advantage of a clean and well-lit environment while at the same time being able to swim while attending detoxification therapy or other classes. Most residential rehabs will also include some form of gyms and recreation centers that allow residents to exercise and socialize, as well as to meet other people. In many cases, rehab centers will have a full-service restaurant onsite and on-site laundry facilities, but they may also provide a cafeteria-style menu where patients can enjoy lunch or dinner on their own. Some SLHs may offer daycare services for children or teenagers who need to attend.
