Sober living homes, also known as sober living centers and transitional housing, are residential care facilities that offer therapeutic, supervised living conditions and safe housing to individuals leaving drug rehabilitation programs. The term “sober” itself is somewhat ambiguous, because individuals entering a treatment program may be of any level of addiction, from mild to severe. SLHs function as a transitional community between these programs and the outside world. SLHs offer many benefits to individuals, including the following:

Many sobered living homes do not have all the amenities most rehabs have. Instead, they include a number of services which help the individual maintain a clean, sober life and keep him or her from going back to the drug use. These services include onsite laundry services, a kitchen and dining room with full-service restaurants and cafeterias, and recreational rooms. In addition, most rehabs have recreational and social programs for families and friends. For example, SLHs may include a gymnasium where individuals can exercise and socialize. There are some residential care facilities which also have laundry services, a laundry room, and an outdoor pool.

Another benefit to a sobered living home is that they offer many services that encourage socialization. There may be a staff of professionals who come to house hold events or group activities for residents. There may also be a social worker who meet with the residents weekly to discuss needs, give referrals to agencies and other resources, and work to develop a plan of action to help the resident to stop his or her substance abuse. These services are sometimes provided for free to individuals in treatment, and they may vary by center.
