Sober Living Homes, sometimes called sober living homes and supervised living environments, are residential facilities that offer structured, safe living conditions and supportive, therapeutic living environments for people leaving drug rehab programs. Some of these facilities are residential drug rehabs, while others are outpatient treatment centers. SLHs act as a transition between these programs and the mainstream community. People who are attending drug rehab programs usually stay in a residential facility for a period of time, often up to twelve months. They then move on to inpatient treatment programs, or outpatient programs if their program requires it.

Most of these homes have some of the same features found in drug rehab programs. These homes generally have individual living quarters and a combination of group and individual activities. The type of activity and community activities vary widely from facility to facility. Many of these homes feature residential drug rehab programs, which focus on the detoxification process from drug abuse. Other facilities focus on more general wellness, including group therapy and counseling services. Others are residential alcohol and drug rehabs, which provide more intensive care for those who have recently relapsed after detoxing from alcohol or drugs.

Drug rehab programs may include outpatient care for up to a year, or longer, depending on the type of drug abuse that is being treated. Most of the time, residential treatment is required for addicts who have been through several detoxification programs or rehabilitation programs, such as inpatient treatment. Residential treatment can be for one to six weeks, which is the most common length of time for residential drug rehab programs. If the residential drug rehab program takes longer than a week, the addict is generally sent home with a case manager or assigned a social worker. In some cases, there is an extended stay, with the addict staying at home and interacting with other members of the family for a period of time. For some addicts, extended care may involve a nursing home or rehabilitation center, or both. In a few cases, extended care may require extended hospitalization.
