Sober Living Homes, also known as sober living residences and sober living facilities, are residences that provide a supportive, structured, safe housing and safe living conditions for individuals exiting drug addiction programs. Some people call them “tough love” because these residences can be quite harsh on their residents. But in the end, it is their own safety that is being sacrificed. If you have decided to go through this process, make sure that you do so knowing what you’re getting yourself into, and what you’re getting out of it.

The first thing that you must do is find out whether your community is a “Sober Living Residential Community.” This designation is given by the Department of Health after an individual completes a residential drug treatment program. It indicates a residential treatment center that focuses on the health and well-being of the individual. Most of the sobered living residences have a doctor on site to help with any questions or concerns the resident may have. In addition, there are often psychologists and support staff available for clients who need it. Many of these communities even have 24-hour security guards, if you so desire.

If your community is not one of those designated as being a Sober Living Residential Community, it’s okay. It doesn’t mean you aren’t doing something good for yourself and those around you. Just know that your options are limited. There may be some places where you’ll have to deal with a higher degree of risk, and you don’t want to take those risks. That’s why it’s important to have a plan in place for all of the things that might happen to you.
