In the United States, Sober Living Homes provides structured housing for people in recovery from substance abuse. These homes, sometimes known as sober living facilities or sober living communities, are typically residential care facilities, providing safe and secure housing to those who have recovered from addiction. SLHs serve primarily as a transition between conventional treatment programs and more progressive, drug-free living.

The residents of a sober home live in one of two types of settings: group homes or apartments. Group homes have several bedrooms and bathrooms, while apartments are typically small, with just one or two bedrooms. In order to provide the best of both worlds, the rooms in a group home and an apartment are often shared by a number of residents, while in an apartment, the rooms are individually owned. In many states, some residents may need to participate in treatment in a hospital setting, usually in conjunction with a doctor’s recommendation. In other states, residents are expected to attend residential treatment on their own.

Many residents of sober living homes choose such treatment programs for a variety of reasons, including the fact that they are located near their homes, and that they are more comfortable there than in other settings. Residents typically use their rooms as small apartments, where they are surrounded by other addicts, which provides a sense of community, although there are some groups that do not live in group homes. Some members of the organization enjoy the feeling of isolation and privacy that the solitude and quiet can bring. In addition, there are often other benefits to using such an organization, including the support that a group offers and the freedom of having a close relationship with their care providers. These benefits can help a member stay on track with their own personal recovery. In many cases, it is possible to join a group home for a short period of time while you complete your recovery from addiction, which can be particularly helpful if you need to get away from it all for a short time.
